Let’s face it, who doesn’t need a kickstart to eating healthier and living better?
Dr. Joel Fuhrman, the best selling author of Eat to Live and the new Eat to Live Cookbook, dropped his so-called G-Bombs all over Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan on his recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Michael, schooling us and the lively pair of co-hosts about how to wipe out and prevent disease and, indeed, how to eat to live. He was spotlighted as part of their Kickstart the New Year feature.
How can a superstar like Dr. Fuhrman cover everything you need to know on how to “eat to live” in only a few minutes of live TV? He actually did a great job of spreading his important and inspiring information, showing tons of excitement and sharing the fact that modern advances in nutritional science truly offers dramatic protection from disease and improved health.

Become a Nutritarian
Dr. Fuhrman’s information-packed segment centered around a diet that is not really a diet, at all. He says that you will never have to diet again! Dr. Fuhrman believes that we can all become “nutritarians” and wipe out cancer, heart attacks, strokes and dementia by eating a diet of high-nutrient, plant-based, whole foods.
- a nutritarian diet does not allow your body store to excess fat… the most powerful anti-cancer foods are fat inhibiting!
- a nutritarian diet is plant-based…. if you must eat any animal products, use it only as flavoring or condiment equaling less than 10% of your total calories
- if you go from a diet where 10% of your calories are derived from animal products to 30% derived from animal products (a typical American diet), your risk of cancer increases 400%
- in a recent 18-year study of 6,000 people, in the 50-65 age range, a diet of high animal protein showed a a 75% increase of early death and a 400% increase in cancers
Dr. Fuhrman explained that the key to nutritarian eating is dropping as many G-Bombs every day as possible. Pray tell, what are G-Bombs?

Greens • Beans • Onions • Mushrooms • Berries • Seeds

G is for Greens
- broccoli, kale, bok choy, watercress, brussel sprouts and arugula
- filled with a substance called ITC’s, which provides dramatic proven protection against cancer, especially breast cancer
- ITCs (isothiocyanates) are released during a chemical reaction that occurs when these veggies are broken down by blending, chopping and chewing
- the protection is magnifies when you chew the greens really well
B is for Beans
- full of resistant starch–the glucose and carbohydrate calories in beans don’t get absorbed and hence, keeps insulin down…very important in the prevention and improvement of diabetes
- dramatic protection against cancer: people who eat beans 2x per week had a 50% lower risk of colon cancer
- Kelly added “You feel so full when you eat it—it really fills you up!”
O is for Onions
- people who eat onions every day see a 50 – 80% reduction in common cancers
- the allicin and quercetin in onions have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and can prevent cancer
- eat it raw because it is heat sensitive—put 1/2 cup of chopped raw onions on your salad every day
- yellow and red onions are as good as white
- studies show that women who eat just 10 grams of mushrooms a day, have 64% lower rate of breast cancer
B is for Berries
- the sugar in berries actually lowers the absorption of glucose in other foods, as do beans
- eat frozen berrries: they are 1/3 the price of fresh, don’t have as much pesticide residue, you can can eat them all year and you have the waste if they go bad in the fridge
S is for Seeds
- flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds etc.
- studies found that women with breast cancer showed a 71% decreased risk of mortality from daily eating of seeds.

The end of the segment featured a tantalizing dish of Banana Chocolate Hazelnut ice cream that Michael seemed to have his eye on. No added sugar and no dairy! Dr. Fuhrman’s original book, Eat to Live, has several similar recipes for frosty treats:
- 2 ripe bananas
- 1/2 cup vanilla soy, hemp or almond milk
- 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts
Freeze ripe bananas at least 24 hours in advance. To freeze, peel, cut into thirds and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Blend all the ingredients in a high-powered blender until smooth and creamy.

Chocolate Cherry Ice Cream
- 1/2 cup vanilla soy, hemp or almond milk
- 1 tablespoon natural cocoa powder
- 4 dates, pitted
- 1 1/2 cups dark sweet frozen cherries
Blend all the ingredients in a high-powered blender until smooth and creamy. If using a regular blender, add only half the cherries and blend till smooth, then add the remaining cherries and continue to blend.
Variation: Use berries or bananas instead of cherries. Freeze ripe bananas at least 24 hours in advance. To freeze, peel, cut into thirds and wrap tightly in plastic wrap.

Jenna’s Peach Freeze
- 1 ripe banana, frozen
- 3 peaches or nectarines, peeled and pitted
- 2 medjool dates or 4 deglet noor dates, pitted
- 1/4 cup vanilla soy, hemp or almond milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Freeze ripe bananas at least 24 hours in advance. To freeze, peel, cut into thirds and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Blend all the ingredients in a high-powered blender until smooth and creamy.
