A visit to the charming all-vegan “ice cream” parlor, Lula’s Sweet Apothecary, located at 516 E.6th Street (between Avenues A & B) in New York City should be on everyone’s bucket list. Words cannot describe how delectable Lula’s dairy-free ice creams really are. During a recent visit, my husband (who is “veganish” and has given up dairy ice cream) was stunned by his peanut butter fudge and chocolate hot fudge sundae. I was so happy to see him enjoy his dairy-free dessert because I know just how much he misses his dairy ice cream. Unfortunately, the store-bought stuff just doesn’t do it for him.
I also thoroughly enjoyed my caramel sundae with cookies & cream ice cream, vanilla with brownies and raspberry swirl, graham crackers and coconut whipped creme.
Check out the menu board with all the choices. Great toppings are available including gummy bears, nuts and chocolate chips. Rumor has it that the “cake batter” soft serve is to die for. I can’t wait to go back to Lula’s to try some. You can get brownie sundaes, brownie a la modes, shakes or floats.
You can even order a dairy-free banana split! Yum!
Although Lula’s Sweet Apothecary is quite small, its size only adds to its charm. The decor is authentic and takes you back in time to a real old-fashioned apothecary or drug store where ice cream sodas were served by a “jerk.” The staff was lovely and very pleasant. Check out the apothecary jars.
At Lula’s, you could also buy vegan candies and treats, including those made by the wonderful Sweet ‘n Sara.
There was a small counter with a few stools if you wanted to stay and eat your ice cream.
Lula’s dairy-free ice cream is homemade, all natural and made fresh daily. In addition to the ice creams being soy and water based, many of them are also nut-based.
It is truly hard to describe just how delicious Lula’s desserts really are! I strongly suggest that you pay a visit, if you can, and that you do some of your own taste testing. You will not be disappointed. I promise!
This is by far the best vegan ice cream!
You bet!
